Little Women


Published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, this classic written by Louisa May Alcott is a coming-of-age story of four sisters. The March girls are different in their demeanours and tastes. Each one of them shares a different relationship with each other and their mother. Through the book, the author takes her readers to the America countryside during the Civil War. It is a heart-warming novel about family and love. The novel was turned into a movie with a stellar cast including Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep, and Saorise Ronan.



And Then There Were None

Agatha Christie, the ‘Queen of Crime’, wrote this novel in 1939. This book begins with 10 strangers stranded on an isolated island, where each day is a test that one must pass to survive until no one is spared. It consists of a mind-boggling plot that keeps you on your toes throughout the book. This one is definitely a ‘must-read’ for suspense lovers. The novel was converted into a web series in 2015, which, too, earned great appreciation from viewers.


The Catcher in the Rye

This one is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger. The 16-year-old protagonist, Holden Caulfield, is not certain about the place from where he narrates the entire story, but he says he is somewhere in a mental facility. Read by adolescents and adults alike, this novel talks about anger, alienation, sex, depression and distress. It illustrates the struggle of a teenager against death and growing up.


To Kill a Mockingbird

Written by Harper Lee and published in 1960, this one was widely read by teenagers and high school students in the USA, and became an instant success. Though it deals with serious social issues of the time such as rape and racial inequality, the novel also surprises readers with its warmth and humour.


Bloodline

Sidney Sheldon, in his third novel released in 1977, talks about how the death of a family heir creates havoc, and causes a lot of drama. You will find yourself enthralled by the family politics while looking out for the killer; every family member has a motive to kill. The other famous novels by this legendary author include If Tomorrow Comes and Nothing Lasts Forever.


The Kite Runner

A 2003 release, this book marked Khaled Hosseini’s debut. Readers are taken through the values of guilt, friendship, desire and loss against the backdrop of Afghanistan. The author has described an unlikely friendship between a rich boy and his father’s servant’s son in a surreal and touching manner. Read this one to get a glimpse into Afghan culture and traditions.


The Forty Rules of Love

Elif Shafak, a well-known Turkish author, wrote this novel in 2009. It comprises two parallel narratives; one about an American writer, Ella, and the other about a scholar and preacher ‘Rumi’ and his companion Shams. The author has beautifully described both the narratives, and does not give readers any reason to complain. Read this book to enter a world that is mystical, magical and full of love.


The Henna Artist

Alka Joshi is an Indian author settled in the USA. In her debut novel, released on March 3, 2020, she narrates the story of how the protagonist Lakshmi left her husband to face the atrocities of the villagers and finally settled in Jaipur, creating a new life for herself. Through this absorbing read, the author takes readers through the unexplored streets of Jaipur with experiences that change one’s perspective about life.
